This series incorporated security features never before seen in Canadian bank notes.

Canadian Journey notes were distinguished not only by enhanced security features, but also by world-class designs and the introduction of a tactile feature to help the blind and partially sighted to identify the different denominations.

Checking security features on bank notes is simple to do. But if you have doubts when verifying any note, ask for another one.

           Canadian Journey Notes (2004–2006)

The Canadian Journey $20, $50 and $100 notes were introduced in 2004, and the $5 and $10 notes were upgraded in 2005–2006 so that the same suite of security features appears on all five denominations.

Tilt the note. The numbers and maple leaves change colour.

Hold the note up to the light and look through it. A small, ghost-like image of the portrait appears. It is visible from both sides of the note.

           3. Dashes

Hold the note up to the light and look through it. The dashes form a solid line. It is visible from both sides of the note.

Tilt the note. The dashes shift from gold to green. Small characters (e.g., CAN 20) match the note’s value.

           4. Puzzle number

Hold the note up to the light and look through it. Irregular marks on the front and back of the note form a complete number. It is visible from both sides of the note.

Feel the raised ink on the shoulders of the portrait, the large number, and the words “Bank of Canada • Banque du Canada.”

Look at the note under UV (ultraviolet) light. Check that the text BANK OF CANADA – BANQUE DU CANADA and a number matching the note’s value glow in interlocking red and yellow. Red and yellow fibres are scattered on both sides of the note.

Tip: Don’t rely solely on this feature. Always look at two or more features when checking notes.

Keep an Eye Out for Counterfeit ‘Frankenstein’ Bills: RCMP

Post POS and the RCMP want you to keep an eye out for counterfeit 'Frankenstein' bills

Police are warning Albertans to watch out for phony Canadian bills, particularly the $50 and $100, which fraudsters are splicing together in a "frankenstein" creation — using the holograms of real five or 10 dollar bills.

"Unfortunately, with any item, no matter how good the quality to prevent counterfeiting, it will still occur," said Corporal Joe Stubbs, a counterfeit money specialist with the Airdrie RCMP.

"What they're doing is, what we're calling Frankenstein-ing the notes," he said. "They're taking a legitimate five dollar bill and cutting out the five dollar bill hologram, taking that hologram and taping it into a counterfeit $50."

The phony bills are easily spotted with the naked eye, Stubbs told the Calgary Eyeopener — but most people aren't looking.

If you're curious, hold it up — a 50 dollar bill will have a 50 inside the translucent maple leaf. This is what the fraudsters are trying to replicate.

They cut a No. 5 out of a real $5 bill and paste it onto the hologram of the fake $50, he said. Most people wouldn't notice the zero is missing.

The polymer feel of the currency is another thing that is difficult for counterfeiters to duplicate, and fairly easy to detect by feel.

"We have seen instances where it's just plastic sheet protectors that you could buy at a local dollar store," Stubbs said.

"For the other notes that we're seeing, they're taking components of the legitimate bills like you're seeing for those Frankenstein bills… and then just treating that paper with some sort of spray resin."

Stubbs says quick transaction business, like gas stations or retail outlets, are more likely to be targeted, because the customer can leave quickly after paying.

Stubbs advises cashiers to make a point of checking currency as customers are lined up to pay. Fraudsters will often be deterred if they see this one sign of vigilance.

And for those meeting up for a Kijiji purchase, it's best to look closely at the bills before pocketing them.

"Our money is nicely colour coded," Stubbs said. "So if the person walks up and pulls three red bills out of their pocket, I see red, I think 50. And I count three, that's 150. I usually pocket that without checking it."

"We encourage people to check the currency and know what they're checking for, and if they suspect there's a counterfeit bill, ask them to give you another one."

Aug has been a good month for counterfeiters in Kelowna and a bad month for businesses targeted. The counterfeit 50's look very real. They feel like real notes. The holograms also look real. They show the correct 3 dimensional images and have been professionally reproduced.

Police Issue Warning After Fake Money Found on Street of Small Southern Ontario Town

Provincial police in Norfolk County issued a warning to area businesses after a large amount of counterfeit money was found on the street in Simcoe on Friday.

Provincial police in Norfolk County issued a warning to area businesses after a large amount of counterfeit money was found on the street in Simcoe on Friday.

Police say the funny money included $20 and $50 denominations and was located on Robinson Street near Kent Street at around 6 p.m.

Police believe that several people may have stopped and picked up the counterfeit currency before police arrived. They say a business in the area gave a fake bill to the officers.

They are warning businesses in Norfolk County and beyond to double-check currency before they accept it.

Police are also warning those who may have picked up the corrupt cash that if they try to spend the funny money, they can be held criminally responsible.

OPP offered some advice on how to spot the fake banknotes, including how they feel to the touch.

“Canadian and U.S. currency is produced with raised ink on the shoulders of the portrait and elsewhere on the note,” they advised in their release

“Run your fingernail over the shoulders of the portrait and you’ll feel the raised ink on a genuine note.”

They also suggested taking a close look at the note and the holographic foil strip.

“The finish on a genuine note does not scrape off and the colour does not run when it gets wet,” police explained.

“The holographic foil strip is embedded in the note, not added as a sticker, and does not peel off.

They also suggest flipping the bill to see if features in the window repeat on both sides and contain numbers that match the bill. The colours are also supposed to change when tilted.

Finally, the value of the bill is hidden in the maple leaf on the corner. On older bills, the holographic strip has maple leaves which are supposed to change colours when a bill is tilted. It will also contain numbers that match the bill’s value.

Bizarre Counterfeit Cash Circulated in Leamington

Post POS and the RCMP want you to keep an eye out for counterfeit 'Frankenstein' bills

Essex County OPP are warning the public that counterfeit cash has recently been changing hands in the Leamington area — and it’s obvious.

On Tuesday, police issued images of a fake bill that resembles a Canadian $20 bill, but has large Chinese letters printed on both sides.

According to investigators, several of these bills have been passed.

“These particular bank notes are more noticeably counterfeit, having additional written language prominently displayed on either side of the bills,” OPP said in a release.

Aside from the Chinese characters, the bad bills are distinguishable from real money by their lack of transparencies and metallic elements.

The bills resemble a Canadian version of what’s called “hell money” — a form of joss paper, or paper notes that are ritually burned in large quantities for the ancestral dead as part of Chinese superstition.

“Hell money” is most often burned during Chinese funerals and on ancestors’ birthdays — but it can also be burned during important holidays and festivals, such as the Lunar New Year.

Amazon.ca sells “hell money” that looks like U.S. currency at a price of $6.99 for a pack of 80 bills.
